Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
A.
Background of the study
Most of the people, if not all, are experiencing boredom all
throughout the day. They are in emotional state in which they are not
interested in their surroundings. Some
people say that boredom is the deadliest poison because it could be bad for
your health. But, what boredom really is?
Let’s take a look what boredom is. Boredom is a lack of interest,
and lack of connection towards life and people. When you are bored you are not
connected in your environment. It's no accident that people who feel bored often
try to solve their dilemma by going to sleep. This is an attempt to remove
consciousness because the conscious state of being bored can loses hope. (http://www.evolutioncounseling.com/boredom-and-depression.html)
Boredom usually stems
from one's own lack of motivation, endeavour or creativity. Everyone gets bored
now and then, but it is the difference between changing that mood to healthy
alternatives versus sitting around with friends "passing the pipe"
for a few high flying hits. It's hard to imagine anyone being bored today; even
if they are not interested in stretching their muscles, feelings or their
minds. Boredom takes some perseverance to shake off. It is a state of mind and
requires a committed determination to do something about it or change up the
routine. (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/heartache-hope/201304/boredom-very-real-road-addiction).
We tend to think
that boredom arises from a lack of (interesting) things to do, but in fact it
arises from the inability to latch onto any specific activity. We perceive our
self as being bored when we are uninterested in and or having difficulty
concentrating on, the current activity, when we are finding it difficult to engage.
Is this the fault of the activity, or something wrong within us? When you feel bored it
means that you are struggling to enjoy the moment.
Boredom is often
viewed as a trivial and mild irritant, and people don't take it seriously they
tend to do some things that can affect their lives like people “don't start using drugs expecting to
develop a substance abuse problems, and while most teens probably see their
drug use as a casual way to have fun, and they dont take it seriosly, there are
negative effects that are a results of this use and abuse of alcohol and other
drugs”(http://www.teen-drug-abuse.org/ ). For this reason this can be lead to depression so then there's
a lot of symptoms of depression, the more symptoms you
have, the stronger they are, and the longer they’ve lasted—the more likely it
is that you’re dealing with depression. When these symptoms are overwhelming
and disabling, that's when it's time to seek help, like Heart disease. Depression is more
common in people with heart disease (chest pain triggered by thickening of the
arteries), heart attack. In addition, they may
have more difficulty returning to work and more general disability.
Antidepressants have been shown to be effective and safe for treating
depression in people with heart disease similarly, depression is
much more common in people after a stroke and is probably increased in people
having 'ministrokes' too. Again, those who suffer depression tend to have a
more severe and prolonged illness than those with no depression.
